IDEAL by Julien Tomasello

$3,500.00

IDEAL by Julien Tomasello is a triptych collage on canvas panels (acrylic, wallpaper, paper, wood, foam, felt, fabric, leather, sand, Swarovski Crystals, beads, paste gems, glitter, photocopies, wire) and is  24 x 108 x 1" inches.

In the words of the artist:

Both works included in the exhibition Dollhouse contain architectural elements that connect to the miniature structures of a dollhouse. Both pieces also contain narratives of autobiographical fiction. These narratives blend actual events, dreams, and desires I expreienced as an LGBTQ+ young person, during the 1980s and 1990’s with threads of fictions influenced through the books, music, films, television, and art I absorbed during this time. This combining of fact and fiction, dream and desire, parallel the constructed narratives created during doll-play.

IDEAL (2025) is inspired by a real boutique named Ideal I often visited with my mother as a child. Here, I experienced a seductive connection (and comfort) to the clothing, accessories, and cultural - icons that seemed to define being female, while the outside world bombarded me with messages of what I had to be as a male. This tug-of-war between mediated images, fashion, and gender-constructs of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s left me feeling confused, scared, and falling short of meeting either ideal.
